In both cases, an important prerequisite when deciding whether to use plaster or wallpaper is the right substrate. When wallpapering, a smooth and even surface is best. But even with unsuitable finishing plaster such as rough or textured plaster, it is in most cases worth working on it so that it is suitable for the wallpaper - simply sand it down and smooth it out with putty if necessary. In other cases, removing the finishing plaster is a better solution.
Above all, a stable and load-bearing substrate is required for plaster. The base materials of the plaster types and coatings used must be compatible with one another. In this way, the plaster can fully develop at the end and bring out its positive properties.
One of the advantages of wallpaper is that it is easier to apply than plaster. However, the substrate must be well prepared. If that's the case, it's an easy game. But beware, if you want to attach a patterned wallpaper, for example, experience and know-how is also required here. Plaster, on the other hand, requires a lot of practice, as long as it is not a brush or roller plaster that can be applied like wall paint. Smooth surfaces in particular are difficult because any unevenness is immediately noticeable.
Wallpaper is also a step ahead when it comes to renovations. Because no matter how many layers of paint it already has on it, when you remove it, the wall is back in its original condition. For thin brushed or rolled plaster, it can therefore be advisable to choose a well-adherent wallpaper as a substrate. So you can simplify future renovations. Other finishing plasters, on the other hand, are too heavy and have to be applied directly. The plaster is then difficult to remove again, but can be reworked later.
Mineral plasters, especially clay plasters, are the better choice for a pleasant living environment. Plaster can absorb moisture and slowly release it back into the room, which has a very good effect on the indoor climate. Although wallpapers generally have similar properties, it also depends on the material, the adhesive and the overlying paint.
If you like to change the design, the wallpaper is a good choice because it is easy to remove and attach and the many different patterns and structures. Visually, there are no limits to the imagination. Plaster, on the other hand, leaves less creative leeway when it comes to design – the structure and attractive wall colors are what count here.
