100 Years of the Werlen Family – Three Generations of MVM History

100 years of MVM AG – this isn't just a company anniversary, but also a story of people who, with passion, skill, and solidarity, have written a piece of corporate history. Hardly any family is as closely linked to the development of MVM as the Werlen family. Three generations – Anton Werlen Senior, Anton Werlen, and Luca Werlen – have guided, shaped, and helped to shape the company. A story of craftsmanship, shared values, and a connection that extends far beyond the workplace.

Anton Werlen Senior – A foundation of craftsmanship and passion

The foundation of this family history was laid back in the 1950s. In 1955, Anton Werlen Senior began working as a plasterer at the then Oskar Vonmoos AG. With dedication, precision, and passion, he quickly rose to the position of foreman and later took over management of the plastering shop and the customer plastering shop until his retirement in 2000.

One of his largest projects was the Lucerne Cantonal Hospital, which he managed as foreman for four years – a formative period that cemented him in his role and paved the way for future generations.

45 years of MVM – that's more than a career. It's a legacy of skill, responsibility, and passion. Anton Senior laid the foundation for a tradition that continues to this day.

Anton Werlen – from drywaller to experienced project manager

In 1985, Anton Werlen began working as a drywall craftsman. With energy and a passion for learning, he gradually worked his way up to foreman before moving to the office in 2007 and assuming the role of project manager.

A significant chapter in his career was a major project in Rotkreuz. He managed the project on-site for a year – his office was located in a construction site hut.

"It was an intense time. I was right in the middle of the action, able to make decisions directly on the construction site – that shaped me. I learned a lot, had to react quickly, and take on responsibility."

remembers Anton

After completing the project, he moved to the tender office, where he still works today. There, he handles own tenders, dimensions, and estimates, and supports the project managers.

Luca Werlen – new paths with family roots

Luca Werlen, the third generation, followed in his family's footsteps in 2005 and began his apprenticeship as a plasterer at MVM. After successfully completing his apprenticeship, he continued his training as a foreman in the plastering department in 2011.

A herniated disc forced him to reorient his career in 2014 – and at the same time opened new doors. After internal retraining, Luca took on roles in the magazine, later in sales. He worked outside of MVM for four years before returning with a clear decision and a fresh perspective.

"I met my wife during this time, and we now have two daughters. After that, I knew: I wanted to return to MVM."

says Luca.

Today, he works as a project manager in the customer plastering department. He prepares quotes, conducts negotiations, supervises employees, and supports projects from start to finish.

Three generations – one common spirit

Combined, Anton and Luca bring over 55 years of MVM experience to the table—an impressive number, but above all, a sign of a truly committed relationship. "The company has shaped our family," says Anton. "We've experienced good times and difficult times, but we stick together."

Luca also feels this family bond:

"I was able to learn a lot from my father—especially in drywall construction. At the same time, he gets tips from me today. We benefit from each other, even if we don't work together every day."

The two have special memories of projects like the Vierstadt Villa, the Hotel Astoria, and the work on Mount Pilatus. "We were working day and night – including transporting materials by helicopter," Luca says with a laugh. "You never forget moments like that."

Work and family – a natural connection

For the Werlens, the MVM was always part of everyday family life: visits to construction sites, summer jobs, conversations at the dinner table – the craft was simply part of it.

"Nevertheless, we were always able to clearly separate our professional and private lives," says Anton. "It was never a problem working at the same company—in fact, it bonded us."

Luca adds: “I consider it a privilege to be able to learn from my father and from experienced colleagues like Gjon Gojani.”

Gjon, who has been with MVM for over 25 years, has also long been part of the "company family." "Gjon is like a brother to me—he continues to shape the family and the company to this day," says Anton.

Looking forward

Anton is slowly thinking about his retirement:
"I won't quit completely. I want to gradually reduce my workload—perhaps continue working at 60 percent for another year or two—and then have more time for traveling, cycling, and carnival."

Luca sees his future clearly:

"I want to take on responsibility, develop myself, and inspire young people to pursue a career in the trade. You never stop learning in our profession—that's the beauty of it."

A legacy of passion

When father and son look back on their time together at MVM, one thing is clear: It's about more than just work. "I don't regret a minute," says Anton. "MVM is like a second family – and has been for decades."

Luca adds: "I hope young people appreciate the plastering profession more again. It's a versatile, creative profession in which you can grow – both technically and personally."

The story of the Werlen family shows what MVM For 100 years, this has been what it's been all about: people with passion, heart and soul, and consistency. Three generations, one common goal – quality, team spirit, and the joy of craftsmanship.
